PRINTING AND PROCESSING WORKSHOPS 

Taking place in our professionally equipped air-conditioned darkroom, we run regular darkroom workshops in negative development, black and white printing, and a variety of alternative processes. Our workshops are designed to give you the skills to continue using the darkroom independently, with confidence and to master new techniques. All of our tutors are experienced and are practising artists and photographer’s. Workshop participants do not need to become facilities members of Resort Studios.

*Workshop participants must read the Health and Safety Information and will be asked to sign a release of liability form upon arrival, to indicate they have understood the safety requirements associated with working with photographic chemicals and in a low light environment.

  • All classes/workshops require payment in advance to secure your spot.
  • Class/workshop bookings are needed by 5pm one day before the event begins.
  • Payment is non-refundable for cancellations within 24 hours of class/workshop start time, and for no-shows, unless under exceptional circumstances. 
  • Payments will be refunded if the minimum enrollment is not met.

Access:  Please note the studio is up two flights of stairs. Unfortunately there is no wheelchair access.

Digital Darkroom

Combine digital phone photo’s and analogue printing techniques in this easy & fun mobile phone printing workshop in the darkroom.

Suitable for participants age 11 upwards. No previous experience neccessary. (under 16’s will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian)

Participants will need to bring their own smart phone and have the ability to download an app and also have selected the photos they wish to print prior to the workshop.

Participants will take away up to 5 completed photographs. Once booked on to the course we can guide you towards several free apps for turning your phone photos into digital negatives. You will learn how to use your smartphone to print directly onto light sensitive photographic paper and develop the prints using traditional darkroom techniques.

Why not come prepared with some photos of our beautiful coastline to maually print during this workshop – a fantastic seaside memory to keep forever!

3 hr Introductory & Refresher Black & White Photographic Printing Workshop

20/07/16 – Wednesday

18.30pm – 21.30pm

Adult: £35

Full Time Student/Graduate (within 6 months)/Resort Member: £25

Taught through a series of demonstrations and exercises, this practical skills-based workshop is an intensive 3 hour introduction to the darkroom, taking students through the fundamentals of black and white printing, how to use an enlarger and develop prints with photographic chemistry.  

You will learn how to print from black and white negatives; how to produce a contact sheet, a test strip and explore variable contrast printing filters resulting in you producing your own resin coated, silver gelatin based photographic images to a good standard.  

By the end of this workshop you should be able to:

Create a selection of images using techniques learned

Be familiar with working in the darkroom

Who Should Attend:

This course is designed to refresh those who have not printed for sometime and familiarize those who are new to printing in a darkroom.

Level: 
Beginners. No darkroom experience is required.

1 Day Beginners Black & White Photographic Printing Workshop.

17.07.16- Sunday

10.30am – 16.30pm (with 1 Hour for lunch)

Adult: £95

Student/Graduate (within 6 months)/Resort Member: £85

Taught through a series of demonstrations and exercises, this practical skills-based workshop will help you feel confident about working in the darkroom, taking students through the basic fundamentals of black and white printing, how to use an enlarger and develop prints with photographic chemistry.  

You will begin by learning how to make photograms – a beautiful camera-less technique, inspired by the greats such as Man Ray, Lee Miller, Susan Derges and many others, where you will be guided in how to create unique silver gelatin based artistic prints.

We will then move on to printing from negatives; how to produce a contact sheet, exploring variable contrast printing filters resulting in you producing your own resin coated, silver gelatin based photographic images to a good standard.  

By the end of this workshop you should be able to:

Create a selection of images using techniques learned

Acquire an understanding of how to apply these processes in your own work

Be familiar with working in the darkroom

Who Should Attend:

Beginners, Photography students, practicing artists and those interested in analogue and alternative photography processes.

Level: 
Beginners. No darkroom experience is required.

What to Bring:

The course only covers the printing of images from already processed film – it does not cover the topic of film processing itself; participants should therefore bring previously processed negatives, however if you do not possess any they can be provided.
